How much protein you actually need on a GLP-1
Appetite suppression makes it easy to under-eat protein. Here's the target, why it matters, and how to hit it without forcing meals.
The single most common mistake we see on GLP-1s isn't a dosing error โ it's under-eating protein. When appetite drops 40โ60%, total intake drops with it, and protein is usually the first macronutrient to fall off the plate.
The target
Aim for 0.7 to 1.0 grams of protein per pound of goal body weight, spread across three feedings. For most adults on a GLP-1, that lands between 100 and 160 grams per day. Below that range, weight loss will still happen โ but a larger share will come from lean mass rather than fat.
Why lean mass matters
Muscle is metabolically expensive tissue. Losing it lowers your resting energy expenditure, which is exactly the opposite of what you want long-term. Patients who preserve muscle keep the weight off after tapering; patients who don't tend to regain within a year.
Practical tactics
Anchor every meal with a protein source before anything else touches the plate. Keep ready-to-eat options โ Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, jerky, rotisserie chicken, a shake โ for days when nausea makes cooking unappealing. Two scoops of whey in water is 50 grams in 30 seconds.
Resistance training is the other half
Protein without a stimulus to use it is just expensive urine. Two to three short resistance sessions per week โ even bodyweight or bands โ is enough to signal your body to hold onto muscle while the scale moves.
