ODT tablets vs. injectables: choosing the format that fits your life

May 28, 2026 · 4 min read

Absorption, convenience, cost, and adherence — how to pick between orally disintegrating tablets and injectable formulations.

Both formats deliver the same active molecule. What differs is how it enters your system, how much of it survives, and how you feel about the routine.

Injectables

Subcutaneous injections have the strongest pharmacokinetic profile — near-complete bioavailability and predictable weekly dosing. If you want the cleanest data on response, this is the format most clinical trials use.

ODT tablets

Orally disintegrating tablets dissolve under the tongue and absorb through the oral mucosa, bypassing much of first-pass metabolism. Bioavailability is lower than injectable but consistent enough for meaningful results, and there are no needles.

How to choose

If needles are a hard no, start with ODT. If you want maximum response per dollar and are comfortable with a weekly injection, choose injectable. Your provider can switch formats mid-plan if the first choice isn't the right fit.
